1909 -2009 Sport at Norwood Park

At the end of July the weekend was set aside for celebrating 100 years of Sport at Norwood Park.

As we are just a Section of the Beverley Cricket & Recreation Club there were never any plans to hold a separate event, in fact there was a debate as to when the 100 years would be reached as there appeared to be very few records available.

It was discovered during the research for the celebrations that a bowling green was in existence in Beverley in 1907. The current area was purchased in 1909 which was a field and there followed a lot of work to make the land suitable for playing Sports.

In 1922 Ladies were invited to join us and the Club remained with two separate sections until around 1997. In 1978 a New Club House was funded.  It was not until the Winter of 2005/6 that the last signs of the two sections were removed from the clubhouse when during refurbishment the folding dividing wall was removed.

There are two Greens at Norwood. One of 1600sq metres which was known as the Men’s green and a smaller green of 1000 sq metres known as the Ladies green.

In the early 90’s it was decided that a watering system would be installed, the cost for both greens was approx £5400.  As the Ladies Section did not have any money the system was only put on the Men’s green (now known as No 1 green) at a cost of £4500. The Ladies Green (now known as No 2 green) still does not have an automatic watering system.

The weekend of Celebration started on the Friday evening with a ‘Ball’ which was held in a Marquee hired for the weekend. The event was well attended with 250 past & present Members, wives and friends attending and enjoying the ‘live’ music. Saturday was a ‘Casino’ Night and on Sunday afternoon a Fashion Show was held with many of the local shops displaying their wares. A good time was had by those attending the various events.

There is an Exhibition at the Treasure House in Beverley which runs until 6 September that gives more detail and also a Brochure has been produced and is available at the Club.

Whistle Stop Success

The 24th Annual Beverley Town Bowling Club’s Whistle Stop, held at Norwood Park on Sunday
28 June, reached an exciting conclusion as thunder rumbled around the area.  After a day of competitive bowling the 2 top teams were drawn against each other in the last session of the day.  The match resulted in a draw and the winner had to be decided on ‘shot difference’.  B Hague’s Inglemire Police team having the better result was declared the winners with C Lunt’s team from Burton Pidsea the runners up.  Shots difference was also used to determine the 3rd and 4th places.  G Johnson of Brandsburton was 3rd by 2 shots from A Chambers of Princess Elizabeth.

All 38 teams attending enjoyed the day and are looking forward to next year’s competition and hope that both Michael Guest of ‘Guest and Philips’ and Beverley Building Society will continue to sponsor the event.
